01 / ABOUT THE PLACE

About this place

Hearing the tabletop gas roaster fire up while glancing at the handwritten menu strips lining the walls captures the timeless appeal of a neighborhood yakiniku parlor. Located on the 2nd floor of a building in Oyama-Higashicho, Itabashi Ward, Heiwaen is an unpretentious restaurant outfitted with both regular tables and raised tatami seating. Opening a cold bottle of beer while grilling initial rounds of salted beef tongue and skirt steak establishes an easy, comforting rhythm.

Among the grilled cuts, the tender offal earns regular praise. Unadorned cuts such as kalbi short rib, loin, upper rumen, and beef liver sizzle over the iron plate, sending up appetizing aromas. Crisp sanchu wrap leaves, seasoned red leaf lettuce, and namul vegetable side dishes provide clean, refreshing interludes between richer bites.

Alongside the barbecue, the kitchen's simmered soups are well worth ordering for their pronounced dashi depth. The kalbi soup stands out with large chunks of bone-in beef cooked until tender in a robust broth. Heartier appetites can turn to gukbap and kalbi gukbap over rice, while noodle options such as kalbi udon and yukgaejang ensure the meal closes on a deeply warming note.

Open from 17:30 in the evening until 0:30 past midnight, the parlor caters equally well to a quick dinner after work or a late-night feast at an unhurried pace.
